Documents Required for a Visa

Collecting documents is the most responsible preparation stage. Depending on the visa type, the list can include special certificates (for example, an enrollment letter for a student visa or an invitation for a business visa). However, there is a basic list needed by almost all applicants:

• International passport. A valid international passport + old passport (if it contains visas from past trips). The current passport must be valid for the entire planned stay. If you have several valid passports, you must provide all of them. Include pages with previous visas (Schengen, US, etc.) — a rich visa history increases trust. The passport will be kept at the visa center during processing, as the visa sticker will be affixed if approved.
• Visa application form (Application Form). Filled out online on the UK Visas & Immigration website in English. After completing the form and uploading documents, you receive a confirmation for your appointment at the visa center — this must also be printed and taken with you. Since 2018, all UK visa applications are submitted online: you fill out the form on the website and upload scanned copies of all documents. At the visa center, you only submit your passport and biometrics; all documents are reviewed electronically. Nevertheless, we recommend having paper copies of essential documents (in case of technical issues or questions).
• Photograph. Physical photos are not required now; your photo will be taken at the visa center during biometrics. However, when filling out the online application, you may be asked to upload a digital photo that meets specific requirements (background, size). • Consular fee payment receipt. When submitting the application online, the applicant pays the visa fee by bank card. After successful payment, an electronic receipt is generated — you should save or print it. This is proof you have paid for processing. Without payment, your application will not be processed.   • Employment certificate — on company letterhead, indicating your position, salary, hire date, and confirmation that your job is retained during your leave. Preferably, it should mention the purpose of the trip (e.g., “leave granted from __ to __ for tourist trip to the UK”). If you are a private entrepreneur, you need registration documents for your business, tax reports.
  • Bank statement — for the last 3–6 months, showing current balance. Sufficient funds are essential; officers check you have enough money for the whole stay. The sum should cover transportation, accommodation and daily needs. Large one-time credits just before the trip without explanation raise suspicions; a steady flow of funds is preferable.
  • Additional financial documents: currency purchase certificates, property documents (apartment, car), which can be sold if necessary — anything showing your financial capability.
• Sponsorship letter (if someone else pays for the trip). If another person is covering your costs — a relative inviting you, or your employer is sending you on a business trip — you need an official letter from the sponsor. The sponsor must specify which expenses are covered (airfare, accommodation, etc.) and confirm their financial readiness. Proof of the sponsor's income must be attached: bank statements, employment certificates, a copy of the sponsor's passport, and a document confirming your relationship (family, employment, etc.). Without these, a sponsorship statement will not convince the officer.
• Family status documents. Marriage or divorce certificate, children's birth certificates. These prove your family ties. Having family left in your home country is a strong indication you intend to return. If you are traveling with your spouse or children, these are needed to prove your relationship.
• Property documents. If you own a flat, house, land, or car, include copies of ownership documents (sale contracts, title deeds, vehicle registration). Property in your home country shows your attachment and financial status, which indirectly reduces concerns about immigration intent.
• Other documents as appropriate. Visa With No Travel History ("Clean Passport")

Many people worry about whether they can get a UK visa if they have no previous visas in their passport. A “clean” passport by itself is not an official reason for refusal. The UK does not require Schengen or US visas. Each case is considered individually, and beginners also successfully get visas if all other requirements are met.

However, lack of travel history does increase requirements for other aspects of your application. As mentioned above, British officers use travel history as an indicator of applicant reliability. If someone has never traveled abroad, it is harder to assess if they will return on time. Therefore, with a “clean” passport, it is especially important to compensate for this with other evidence of reliability:

• Focus on documents proving your strong social and economic ties to your country: family, job, education, property. Show that you have obligations that will make you return.
• Carefully plan and describe your travel itinerary, the purpose of each day. Specific plans and bookings (hotels, tours) demonstrate your intention is tourism, not migration.
• If you have an old passport with trips (even visa-free, e.g. Turkey, Egypt), provide copies of stamped pages. This is better than no travel at all.
• In some cases, you can add a cover letter explaining why you have not traveled before and confirming your good intentions now.

Time frames. The standard processing time for a UK visa application for foreign nationals is about 3 weeks (15 business days) from the date of biometrics submission. However, during peak periods (holidays, summer), processing can take longer. Complex cases (such as those requiring extra checks, interviews, or where there was a previous refusal) may also take longer. You can check your status online, but usually you simply get an email with the decision and collect your passport afterwards.

If your trip is urgent and you cannot wait, there is a paid service called Priority Visa — expedited processing. Priority processing gives a decision in about 5 business days instead of the usual 15. The cost of Priority is quite high — around £500 in addition to the regular fee, but it’s an option for urgent cases. Note that Priority does not guarantee visa approval, only faster processing. Not all visa categories and countries offer this service — as of this writing, Priority Visa for tourist and visitor visas is generally available. Super-priority visas (1-2 days) are only available in some countries.

Consular fee (visa fee) depends on visa category and duration. Payment is made online by bank card in GBP; the system converts the amount to your local currency automatically. The official tariffs as of April 9, 2025 (after the latest increase by UK authorities):

• Standard 6-month visa — £127 (single or multiple entry, up to 180 days).
• 2-year visa — £475.
• 5-year visa — £848.
• 10-year visa — £1059.

For most tourists and short-term visitors, a 6-month visa is sufficient. If you plan frequent travel to the UK, you can request a 2-year or longer visa — as you can see, the price increases considerably. For example, a 10-year visa costs over $1300 at the current exchange rate. Only pay for the duration you really need, otherwise you will overpay for nothing. Also note: in case of visa refusal, the consular fee is not refunded, regardless of the reason.
