Guest Visa (Invitation Visa)

A guest visa is also considered a B2 visa but implies that the applicant has an invitation from someone in the U.S. — a relative or friend. The purpose is a private visit by invitation. Formally, there are no separate "invitation visas"; you still apply for the standard B1/B2 tourist visa. However, such visits are popularly called guest trips and have their own specifics. The thing is, having an invitation from relatives may actually increase the risk of refusal compared to regular tourism. The consul might suspect that, since you have close people in the U.S., you may want to stay longer or even immigrate. That’s why applying for a guest visa requires extra attention. It is important to prepare a convincing invitation from the inviting party and other documents proving your strong ties to your home country (work, property, etc.) to dispel any concerns. Validity Period of U.S. Visas

U.S. visas are issued for different periods depending on the applicant’s citizenship and visa type. The B1/B2 tourist/guest visa is usually issued for several years with multiple entries. The maximum validity for this category is now 10 years — this is granted to citizens of Ukraine and Kazakhstan (as well as many other countries) . For Russian citizens, the maximum validity is limited to 3 years (due to a bilateral agreement of 2012). The consul always tries to grant the maximum period, but the final decision depends on your situation. Sometimes, a Russian tourist is granted only a single-entry visa for a few months instead of three years. If you convince the officer of your strong home ties, you will receive a multiple-entry visa for the full period.

Generally, the B1/B2 tourist or guest visa allows you to stay in the U.S. for no more than 180 days per visit. The specific period will be indicated by the immigration officer on your electronic I-94 document when crossing the border. It is important not to exceed this period; otherwise, you may face problems when applying for a new visa. Note that the visa validity is not linked to your passport: if your passport expires, the U.S. visa in it remains valid until the date specified on the visa. You can travel with two passports — the new (valid) one and the old one (with the visa). Thus, a ten- or three-year multiple-entry visa will allow you to visit the U.S. throughout its validity, as long as you follow the rules.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Visa?

The time required to obtain a U.S. visa depends on many factors: your preparation, urgency, visa category, and availability of interview appointments. The main steps — completing the form, paying the fee, and scheduling the interview — can be done within a few days if you act promptly. The longest stage is waiting for the interview date at the embassy. In 2023–2024, due to the pandemic and geopolitical reasons, there were long queues for B1/B2 visas in many consulates. The situation is now gradually improving: in some countries, you can schedule an interview within a few weeks (for example, Russians are now seeing appointments in neighboring countries within the next few months). Reasons for U.S. Visa Refusal and How to Avoid Them

The American embassy may refuse to issue a visa without explanation, but in practice refusals are almost always related to certain factors. The most common reason is insufficient ties to the home country. If the officer decides you may have motives to stay in the U.S. longer than allowed or to immigrate illegally, they will refuse under 214(b) (immigration intent). What can make the consul suspicious? Here are the main cases:

• Lack of stable employment or income in your home country. Unemployed applicants or those with low incomes are considered higher risk — there is a concern about how you will pay for your trip and whether you will use tourism as a pretext to look for work in the U.S. Solution: provide an employment certificate with a decent salary, documents for your own business, or a sponsor letter from a relative who will pay for your trip (with proof of their finances).

• Poor travel history. If your passport is almost empty and you want to visit the U.S. first, the consul may be wary. It is generally recommended to travel to other countries (Europe, Asia) first — this proves your reliability and solvency. Of course, the absence of visas does not mean an automatic refusal, but other factors (finances, purpose of visit) should be especially convincing.

• Long previous stays in the U.S. Even if you have been granted a visa before, violating its conditions may cause problems next time. For example, a tourist visa allows up to 180 days, and if you previously stayed for the entire 6 months or extended your stay, the officer will notice. Those who used all allowed days (or overstayed) are suspected of working or other non-tourist activities. • Close relatives in the U.S. Paradoxically, relatives in America can be a negative factor for the consular officer. If you have close relatives willing to host you, the officer may suspect a hidden motive. This reason for refusal is common. Solution: never hide your relatives (be honest on the form), but don’t focus on it. Provide a clear travel plan showing you intend to travel as a tourist, not stay with relatives.
