Every year more people around the globe — especially from Ukraine, Russia, and Kazakhstan — travel to China for various purposes. Tourists are drawn by its exotic landscapes, unique culture, and ancient monuments. Others seek career opportunities: China’s dynamic market offers good jobs and competitive salaries. Some go to study at leading Chinese universities ranked among the world’s best. One thing all these travelers share is a visa is required. Even citizens of friendly countries must obtain Chinese entry permission. Only a few special cases and regions allow visa-free entry for limited stays. Below, we’ll cover when a visa isn’t needed and the main Chinese visa categories.
When no visa is required:
- Hong Kong & Macau. These special administrative regions have their own visa policies. Short visits (e.g., up to 14 days in Hong Kong, up to 30 days in Macau) are visa-free for many nationalities.
- Hainan Island (tour groups). Organized tour groups can stay visa-free on Hainan for about 21–30 days, provided they remain within the island.
- Transit. Air travelers can stay transit-visa-free for up to 72 hours (or up to 144 hours in some major cities). Since late 2024, China extended transit exemption to 10 days for citizens of 55 countries. You must continue onward to a third country or it counts as overstaying.
There are also bilateral visa-waiver agreements. For example, since November 2023, Kazakhstan and China mutually allow visa-free stays up to 30 days for tourism, business, or visiting friends/family. For longer stays or work/study you still need the appropriate visa. Ukrainians and Russians must obtain a Chinese visa in advance. Main Chinese Visa Categories
Chinese visas are letter-coded by purpose: L for tourism, M for business, F for visits or exchanges, Z for work, X for study, Q for family reunion, S for private visits, G for transit, etc. Below are the most common types: tourist, work, student, and private-visit visas.
Tourist Visa (L)
The L visa is the most common. It’s required for travel: sightseeing, excursions, national parks, cultural events, and more. You can apply for a single-entry or double-entry visa, or a multiple-entry visa (e.g., valid one year) allowing repeated visits. Each entry is typically limited to 30, 60, or 90 days.
Processing & Requirements. Standard stay is 30 days (sometimes extendable to 60 with justification). Apply about one month before travel. Processing takes 4–7 business days, with expedited 2–3 day service available. Fingerprint collection is mandatory for applicants over 14. However, from September 2024 to December 2025, the Chinese embassy in Russia waived biometrics for single- and double-entry short-term visas (up to 180 days), simplifying the process for Russian tourists. Biometric rules may vary by country—we’ll advise you where personal submission is needed.
Documents: passport (valid ≥6 months), passport copy, one 3.5×4.5 cm color photo, completed form, and proof of travel purpose: round-trip flight booking, hotel reservations, or a tour agency invitation. Financial proof (bank statement ~ $100/day or employment letter) improves approval odds. Validity: the visa’s validity period (e.g., 3 or 6 months) is the window to enter China. Your allowed stay begins on entry day. Single-entry visas expire on exit; new entry requires a new visa or a multiple-entry visa. We’ll help you choose the optimal visa type based on trip length and frequency.
Work Visa (Z)
The Z visa is mandatory for official employment in China. Working on any other visa is illegal and leads to deportation and entry bans. To obtain Z, you must secure a Work Permit from Chinese authorities via your employer, then apply for the visa with the employer’s official invitation or permit notice.
Typically Z visas are single-entry, allowing you to enter for employment. Upon arrival you apply locally for a Residence Permit (valid for your contract duration). We guide you through gathering required documents—degree certificate translations, criminal record checks if needed, medical exam, and your employment contract. High-level experts may qualify for the R visa, but most will use Z. Start the process 2–3 months ahead. Student Visa (X1/X2)

Documents: essential are the JW201/JW202 form and Admission Notice from your Chinese institution. Also required are passport, photo, application form, and often a criminal record check and health certificate—requirements vary by consulate. After entry on X1, apply within 30 days for a student residence permit. We manage the entire process so you can focus on your studies.

- Q visas for visiting close relatives. Q1 is for long stays (>180 days, leading to a family-reunion residence permit); Q2 is for short-term family visits (≤180 days).
- S visas for visiting foreign residents in China (e.g., spouse or friend on a work or student permit). S1 is for long stays (>180 days); S2 for short visits (≤180 days).
To apply, submit your host’s invitation letter with both parties’ details, visit dates, and purpose, plus proof of relationship (marriage/birth certificates).
