Canada – a popular destination for travel, study, work, and relocation. Most foreign nationals must secure a visa in advance. Consulates carefully review all paperwork, so for a successful application you need a complete document package and correctly filled forms.

Visa Requirement Overview

Entry to Canada is by visa only. There is no visa-free regime; regardless of your trip’s purpose, you must obtain the appropriate visa.

Main Visa Categories

Canadian visas are divided into:

  • Temporary (non-immigrant) – for short-term visits.
  • Immigrant (permanent resident) – for those planning a move to permanent residency.

1. Visitor Visa

Intended for tourism, family and friend visits, business meetings, and short courses (up to 6 months). Typically granted for multiple entries valid up to 10 years (or until passport expiry). Each stay is at the border officer’s discretion, up to 6 months per entry.

Special subtype:

  • Super Visa – for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or residents, allowing consecutive stays up to 2 years.

2. Study Permit

For enrolling in Canadian colleges, universities, or language schools. Requires a Letter of Acceptance, proof of funds for tuition and living expenses, and possibly a medical exam and police clearance. Permits part-time work during studies and eligibility for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after program completion.

3. Work Permit

For official employment in Canada. Typically requires a job offer from a Canadian employer and, in some cases, a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Also requires evidence of qualifications and language proficiency. Issued for a specific employer for the contract duration. Dependents may apply for accompanying visitor or study/work permits.

4. Permanent Residence

Granted upon completion of an immigration program (Express Entry, Provincial Nominee, family sponsorship, etc.). Requires meeting criteria: education, work experience, language skills, and more. Upon approval, you receive an entry visa and subsequently your PR card.

Other Visa Types

Additional special categories include:

  • Transit Visa
  • Crew Member Visa
  • Charitable Worker Visa
  • Spousal or Fiancé(e) Visa

Required Documents

A complete application requires attaching all necessary documents. Standard package includes:

  • Valid passport (and any passports from the past 10 years).
  • Proof of citizenship (e.g., national ID card or certificate).
  • 35×45 mm color photo (420×540 px).
  • Employment letter (or proof of other income); acceptance letter for students.
  • Bank statement covering the last 6 months.
  • Documents on marital status (marriage/birth certificates).
  • Proof of property ownership (if applicable).
  • Invitation letters, acceptance letters, employment contracts, etc., depending on visa category.

All non-English/French documents must be translated by a certified translator. Financial statements should be dated within 1–2 weeks of application. Pay the visa fee before submission.

Application Procedure

  1. Select the visa category based on your trip purpose.
  2. Gather and translate the required documents.
  3. Register on the IRCC portal and complete form IMM 5257 and any supplementary forms.
  4. Pay the visa fee (CAD 100–155) and, if required, the biometrics fee (CAD 85).
  5. Provide biometrics at a VFS Global Visa Application Centre on first application.
  6. Await the decision; processing can range from weeks to months.
  7. If approved, submit your passport for visa stamping according to the instructions (usually within 30 days).

Processing Times & Fees

Visitor visa processing times can reach 8–10 months. Expedited processing is available only for urgent humanitarian or medical reasons. Apply well in advance.

Key fees:

  • Visa fee: CAD 100 (visitor), CAD 150 (study permit), CAD 155 (work permit).
  • Biometrics fee: CAD 85 per applicant (up to CAD 170 for a family applying together).
  • VFS service fee: approx. CAD 40 (if no biometrics fee applies).
  • Additional costs: translation, notarization, courier delivery, medical exams.

Common Refusal Reasons & Tips

Frequent causes of refusal:

  • Incomplete or inconsistent documents/translations.
  • Incorrect visa category selection.
  • Unsubstantiated trip purpose.
  • Insufficient financial evidence.
  • Weak ties to the home country.
  • Past immigration violations.

Always double-check all information and consider attaching a cover letter explaining your intent to return and additional ties to your home country.
